Report of the First Aid Workshop for Psychological and Social Support

Within the framework of psychological support for those displaced from the scourge of war, and in emphasis on social responsibility by voluntary work organizations, the Tawasul Charitable Organization – Sudan (TACO) provided one of the most successful emergency workshops in cooperation with the Department of Mental and Psychological Health of the Ministry of Health, Gazira State.

Dr. Salwa Awad, Director of the Mental Health Department in Gazira State, speaking to the Official Spokesman’s Platform about the Ministry’s role in providing psychological and social support in the shelter centers in the state, which began in the first week since the start of the war, starting with three centres. The Ministry of Health in Gazira State is also considered one of the first state ministries to intervene to provide initial psychological support by creating forms to sort cases into different levels as a first stage, and then distributing psychologists to all shelter centers as a second stage, where the treatment service is provided free of charge. In addition to training three groups of psychologists, volunteers, and family doctors to provide specialized services inside the shelter centers for psychological and social support.

Some of the organizations (WHO) provided some medications for chronic diseases and psychiatric medications, which were distributed to the Mental Health Hospital. It is noted that there is an increase in psychologists in the state at this stage, and this is considered one of the positives to cover the shortage, as there was only one psychologist, but now every shelter in the Greater Madani Locality has more than one psychologist, in addition to activating the psychological clinic throughout the week, in addition to some organizations that work in psychological and social support, whether national or foreign. These recommendations of this workshop are considered one of the positive outcomes of this gathering by forming joint work between the Ministry of Health, Gazira State, and some of International and national organizations, where this group provides psychological and social support services, creates statistics, and collects data through which future studies of the mental health situation can be evaluated.

Dr. Nuha Mohamed Osman, Representative of Tawasul Charitable Organization – Sudan in this workshop, said that the Organization is working to building capacities of all members and partners within the system to conduct a study in order to intervene in a professional manner in the shelter centers. One of the Organization’s goals is to make a complete listing and evaluation of the shelter centers in the state, as the Organization now is conducting a field survey to determine the actual coverage of shelter centers.
